Brew Review - BrouCzech Dark by Nova Paka Brewery

2009 January 8

Started the New Year with a new beer - but went back to the basics. Though I’m not usually a fan of lagers, this was a true simple pleasure. A clear light caramel pour rose into a fairly thick cocoa head giving off an earthy aroma, and the light body imparted a sweet malt and molasses flavor that actually had me licking my lips for the hints of prune and chocolate, while at the same time this was a severely bitter brew . . . frankly, I’ve never had a beer where the sweetness and bitterness were so distinct and unmelded. Like two beers in one! The aftertaste was lingering bitterness, which I’m not a fan of despite the explosion of hop awareness in American brews and chosen imports; nevertheless, this 137 year old brewery has obviously been doing something right for a long, long time. Cheers and many Happy New Years!
